We meet on the second Wednesday of every month (except August) at 7.30 pm in the Harwell Village Hall.
This year's programme is proving both entertaining and informative, and includes local outings.
You can find our full 2011/12 programme on a separate page .
WI has a more serious side to it. Each year resolutions on national issues are discussed and voted on in every institute in the country. In 2011 the resolutions were:
Proposed Mega Farms
“This meeting abhors the practice of factory farming particularly large animals such as pigs and cows and urges H.M. Government to ensure planning permission is not granted for such projects.”
Moved by Dilton Marsh WI, Wiltshire Federation.
This was too close to call and was not voted on at the NFWI AGM.
The Closure of Local Libraries
“This meeting urges H.M. Government to maintain support for local libraries, as an essential local educational and information resource.”
Moved by Nedderton WI, Northumberland Federation.
This was carried at the NFWI AGM.
The library resolution was presented to the Government, so the WI is a force to be taken seriously.
Mums Matter is a joint campaign between the WI and Oxfam calling for more action to improve maternal healthcare in poorer countries.
COOL Current country of origin labelling (COOL) is unclear and misleading to many shoppers. The WI is campaigning for mandatory, clear origin labelling.
SOS for Honeybees Honeybee populations all over the UK have suffered huge losses in recent years. You can help to ensure that our countryside is buzzing for years to come.
No More Violence Against Women The WI is part of the End Violence Against Women campaigning coalition, which aims to create a world in which women and girls are afforded their basic human rights and can live free from violence and its threat.
Care Not Custody The WI is campaigning for an end to the inappropriate detention of people with mental health problems, who would be better treated if diverted to hospitals or community-based alternatives.
